Genesis

NightLight Home Up

It's difficult to think of a way to adequately describe the book of Genesis.  Not only does it accurately and reliably lay out the history of the beginning of God's creation and Mankind, but it also lays the foundation of the entire Bible.  Every major theme of Scripture begins in the early chapters of Genesis.  Every major doctrine of Christianity is firmly rooted in the early chapters of Genesis.  And every major issue in view on our planet today has its origin in Genesis - from abortion rights, to conflict in the Middle East, to arguments over capital punishment, human rights, homosexuality, the family's structure and purpose, pornography, and a host of other modern issues.

It's no wonder that Genesis is the most attacked book of the Bible.  For if the foundations of all these things could be discredited, then the rest would have no foundation on which to stand.  But Genesis remains unscathed and boldly proclaims God's answers to these questions and more as it lays out the history of the first 2000 years of the world's history.

Yet, for the more advanced student,  Genesis also lays the foundation for the study of Biblical types.  Unfathomably rich with symbols, types, "codes", and history which also serves as allegory, Genesis shows that God Authors history in such a way that events, lives, place names, numbers, and other seemingly trivial details fit together into patterns, messages, and prophecies which point so clearly and inescapably to Jesus Christ, that Genesis' Supernatural Authorship becomes quickly and unassailably obvious to the student.  Though the subject of "types" and "typology" is unfortunately lacking from most teaching in today's churches and Bible schools, it's history and authenticity is well-established tracing back to many hundreds or even thousands of years B.C.

Genesis, like every book of the Bible, but perhaps more dramatic and foundational than the rest, points so clearly and unequivocally to Jesus on every page, that in some respects, we discover more detail about certain components of New Testament History, than are actually contained in the New Testament.  It is an inexhaustible resource of history, prophecy, revelation, example, and encouragement to children, students, and scholars alike.
